Rapturous Applause during the Anniversary Edition

“Crossover? No, MIAGI calls it cross-pollination. The curious fruits this produces, including Afro-Cuban flavours, look good at Young Euro Classic. […] Yes, there’s a war in Europe. Still, the utopia of a continent without borders is palpable during the standing ovations and two groovy encores.” - Tagesspiegel, Aug. 26, 2024

The 25th edition of Young Euro Classic was a feast! A total of 23,000 visitors celebrated the anniversary of the festival of the world’s best youth orchestras. They were treated to extraordinary sights and sounds: 16 symphonic concerts, 10 ensemble concerts featuring non-European musical traditions and the education offerings on the Children’s Day brought together 1,125 musicians from 45 countries, performing not only the great works of the European classical canon, but also the art music traditions of their homelands.

Thank you, dear friends of Young Euro Classic, dear audience members, for an unforgettable 2024 season! We look forward to sold-out halls, your cheerful faces and enthusiasm for the young musicians next year again. Young Euro Classic takes place then from August 1 to 17, 2025.

Touching and tension-filled

“The piece was meant to disrupt the silence; slowly and almost unnoticeably, the atmosphere shifted, but never with a sledge-hammer, it always remained subtle.” Thus a jury member described the work “the image of that which is invisible” by the Turkish composer Ege Gür, who was chosen as the winner of this year’s European Composition Award. Congratulations! Under the baton of Cem Mansur, the National Youth Philharmonic of Turkey gave the work its German premiere on August 10. Touching and tension-filled, it commemorated the victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria in 2023, demonstrating how New Music can take on current events.

From Underdog to Star in the String Firmament

Does the cello have so many fans because its sound is most similar to the human voice? That is what many cellists say about their instrument, which became the new star in the string firmament during the romantic era. Since baroque times, the violin had reigned supreme there, while the cello was relegated to the continuo alongside the double bass.

Antonín Dvořák also had to warm gradually to the cello, which was ridiculed as an “agony aunt” because of its distinctive melancholy qualities. During his time the USA, however, he finally wrote a great dance-like concerto for this instrument, and its rich melodies and virtuosity made it an audience favourite all over the world.

The title of the family concert ”Hello Cello” is a salutation with which the Konzerthaus Berlin and an audience aged 7 and up welcome Artist-in-Residence Sheku Kanneh-Mason, his instrument and the Dvořák Concerto. It might also be an exclamation of surprised admiration: well hello – who knew all the things a cello can do!
